Electronics rarely fail at the moment of the loss. The real killer is what happens afterward. Acidic soot and residual moisture get inside the housing and keep eating circuit boards, solder joints, and contacts for days. This is why "it still turns on" is a trap, not a clean bill of health:

• It is invisible. The corrosion is happening on internal boards you cannot see, while the case looks untouched.
• It is progressive. A device that powers on today can be dead next week as residue continues to eat through connections.
• It is accelerated by smoke. Soot is acidic and conductive, so fire and smoke events corrode faster and short circuits more readily than clean water alone.

Stopping that chemical reaction quickly is the entire job, and speed is everything.

Moisture and soot are conductive. When you send current through a device that still has either inside, electricity finds paths the board was never designed to carry. The result is a short that can fry components instantly and permanently, removing any chance of recovery and often any chance of pulling your data off the drive.

This is why our very first step is the opposite of yours: we de-energize. A device that stays off and gets to us quickly can almost always be cleaned, dried, and brought back. A device that was switched on "just to check" frequently cannot. The few minutes of patience before you call is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy for that equipment.

Rice, a hair dryer, a sunny windowsill, a bag of silica packets: these tricks feel productive, but they do not solve the actual problem. They only target surface moisture and never reach the acidic residue bonded to the internal boards. The corrosion keeps advancing under the housing while the outside feels dry, so the device that "seemed fine" fails days later anyway.

Worse, most DIY methods involve handling, shaking, or warming the unit while contaminants are still inside, which can spread residue and create new short paths. Halting corrosion requires de-energizing, disassembly, ultrasonic board-level cleaning, and controlled drying, none of which can be done from a kitchen cupboard. By the time a home remedy has obviously failed, the window to restore the device has usually closed.
