Paper and photographs are among the most time-sensitive materials in any property loss. The risks escalate quickly:

• Irreversible bleeding: water-soluble inks and dyes migrate, blurring text and images permanently within hours.
• Pulping and fusing: saturated fibres swell, pages mat together, and photographs bond to each other and to glazing.
• Mould and rot: within 24-48 hours, damp paper begins to support mould that stains, weakens, and contaminates the collection.

Once any of these takes hold, no later treatment fully undoes it. The only reliable defence is to stop the clock fast, which is exactly what freezing does.

The technique that makes recovery possible is immediate freezing. Bringing wet documents below freezing halts ink migration, stops fibres from pulping further, and shuts down mould before it can start. Freezing does not dry the records, it buys time and locks them in a stable state so nothing gets worse while they wait to be processed. This is why Firstline stabilizes and freezes on site rather than attempting to dry anything in the field.

From there, recovery is done by vacuum freeze-drying. The frozen documents are placed in a chamber where, under vacuum, the ice turns directly to vapour without passing through a liquid stage. Because the water never re-wets the paper, pages do not pulp, cockle, or re-bleed, and bonded sheets release cleanly. It is the gentlest effective way to remove moisture from fragile paper, books, and photographs and is the standard approach for salvaging high-value and irreplaceable records.

The instinct after a flood is to lay papers out to dry or peel apart stuck pages and photos. Both do lasting harm. Air-drying lets water-soluble inks keep bleeding while the paper dries, cockles, and warps in place, fixing the distortion permanently. Pulled-apart wet pages tear, and photographs that have begun to bond will lift their emulsion, the image, right off the paper when separated by hand.

Heat and fans make it worse, accelerating brittleness and driving mould spores around the space. Wet documents are also heavy and fragile, so handling and stacking them causes tearing and crushing. The right move is the opposite of instinct: do not separate, do not dry, and do not stack, freeze fast and let controlled freeze-drying do the work.
