Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning After Water, Smoke, or Heavy Soiling

We clean and restore carpets and upholstery after water, smoke, fire, or soiling damage for homeowners, condo corporations, property managers, and commercial clients across the Greater Toronto Area. We extract, treat, deodorize, and dry the affected materials, one team, with a 24/7/365 response.

When carpet and soft furnishings take on water from a leak or flood, or absorb smoke and soot after a fire, the fibres, backing, and the pad underneath hold moisture and odour that surface cleaning will not remove.

We deep clean the fibres, draw the contamination out of the backing and pad, neutralize the odour at the source, and dry the materials fully so mold does not take hold. This is also part of how we handle contents restoration on a larger loss, since soft goods are some of the first things water and smoke ruin.

Open 24/7/365 with a 45-minute emergency response. Firstline has been doing this work for 20 years, and every trade on a Firstline project is fully licensed, insured, and works to code.

What's Included

Restoration Cleaning, Not Routine Surface Cleaning

After water, smoke, or fire, carpet and upholstery need restoration cleaning: extraction, deep cleaning, treatment, deodorizing, and controlled drying, not a quick surface pass.

We start by extracting standing water and trapped moisture from the carpet, backing, and pad. We deep clean the fibres to lift soiling, soot, and staining, then treat the materials and deodorize them to remove the odour rather than mask it. We finish by drying everything fully so the carpet, pad, and upholstery do not stay damp and grow mold. On a soiling-only job with no water or smoke, the same extract-treat-deodorize approach applies to traffic lanes, spills, pet damage, and built-up grime.

When to Call

When to Call Firstline for Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

Call us when carpet or upholstery has been soaked, smoke-exposed, contaminated, or heavily soiled and you want it cleaned and dried properly rather than written off.

  • Call right away after water or a flood reaches carpet, rugs, or furniture, because the longer the pad and backing stay wet, the higher the chance of mold and the lower the chance the carpet can be saved.
  • Call after smoke or fire when carpet and upholstery hold a smoke odour or soot, because soft materials trap odour deep in the fibres and need extraction and deodorizing to clear it.
  • Call for heavy soiling, staining, or contamination from spills, pet damage, sewage backup, or long wear, because category of contamination affects whether the material can be cleaned and reused or has to be removed.
Scope of Work

What Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Includes

Extraction and Deep Cleaning

Extraction and Deep Cleaning

We extract water and trapped moisture from carpet, backing, pad, and upholstery, then deep clean the fibres to lift soiling, soot, and staining. Pulling the contamination out of the material is what makes the difference between carpet that recovers and carpet that has to be replaced.

Odour Treatment and Deodorizing

Odour Treatment and Deodorizing

Water, smoke, and soiling leave odour locked in the fibres and backing. We treat and deodorize the materials to remove the odour at the source. When a smoke or odour problem moves through the whole space, we tie this into odour removal services so the room clears, not just the carpet.

Drying to Prevent Mold

Drying to Prevent Mold

Wet carpet and a wet pad are where mold starts. We dry the carpet, pad, and upholstery fully, with airflow and dehumidification when the loss calls for it, so moisture does not stay trapped under the surface. If mold is already present, we move into mold remediation.

Salvage Assessment

Not every carpet can be saved, and we tell you straight. Clean water caught early is usually recoverable; a saturated pad, delaminated backing, or contaminated (grey or black) water often means the carpet or pad has to come out. We make that call based on how long it was wet, the contamination category, and the condition of the backing and pad.

When Carpet Can Be Saved, and When It Cannot

Whether carpet is salvageable comes down to three things: how long it stayed wet, what kind of water or contamination it took on, and the state of the pad and backing.

Carpet wet with clean water and reached quickly can usually be extracted, cleaned, and dried back to use, though the pad underneath is more fragile, so we often replace the pad while restoring the carpet itself. When the water was contaminated, when the carpet sat wet long enough for the backing to delaminate, or when sewage or mold is involved, the carpet and pad generally have to come out rather than be cleaned.

We document the condition either way so the decision is clear when an insurance claim is part of the loss. Because soft goods are part of the wider loss, we handle carpet and upholstery alongside the rest of the affected materials, connected to water damage restoration and smoke damage restoration rather than as a separate trade you have to manage.

Property & Structural

Residential and Commercial Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

In a home, this usually means carpet, rugs, sofas, mattresses, and soft furnishings after a leak, a flooded basement, a fire, or years of wear and pet damage. The priorities are getting the materials clean, getting the odour out, and getting everything dry so the family is not living on damp carpet.

In a commercial space, condo, or managed property, we work around tenants, operating hours, and common areas. Office, corridor, and lobby carpet and upholstered furniture all take on water, smoke, and soiling, and we clean and dry them with the space staying usable wherever possible.

Insurance Claim Help

Insurance Claim Support

When a water or fire loss is behind the carpet and upholstery damage, we work with all insurance carriers and document the affected materials so the claim is supported.

We record the condition of the carpet, pad, and furnishings, note what was salvageable and what had to be removed, and manage the documentation alongside the rest of the loss. We do not guarantee coverage or a specific payout, because those decisions rest with the policy and the carrier.

For the full claim path, see insurance claim restoration assistance. We work directly with your insurance company and bill them directly where the carrier allows it. On a covered claim, insurance pays for the approved work and you normally pay only your deductible.

FAQ

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning FAQ

Can wet carpet be saved after a flood or leak?

Often, yes, if we reach it quickly and the water is clean. We extract the moisture, deep clean the carpet, and dry it fully. The pad underneath is more fragile, so we frequently replace the pad even when the carpet itself can be cleaned and saved. Carpet that sat wet for a long time, took on contaminated water, or has a delaminated backing usually has to be removed instead.

How does Firstline clean carpet and upholstery after water damage?

We extract the water and trapped moisture from the carpet, backing, pad, and upholstery, deep clean the fibres, treat and deodorize the materials to remove odour at the source, and then dry everything fully so mold does not take hold. One team manages the whole job.

Can you remove smoke odour from carpet and furniture?

Yes. Smoke and soot get trapped deep in carpet fibres and upholstery, so a surface pass will not clear it. We extract the soot, treat the materials, and deodorize to remove the odour rather than mask it. When the odour spreads through the whole space, we tie this into our odour removal services.

How fast can Firstline respond?

We are open 24/7/365 with a 45-minute emergency response. With wet carpet, fast extraction and drying are what lower the chance of mold and improve the odds the carpet can be saved.

Will wet carpet grow mold?

It can, if it stays damp. A wet pad and wet backing are common places for mold to start. We dry the carpet, pad, and upholstery fully, using airflow and dehumidification when the loss calls for it, to prevent that. If mold is already present, we move into mold remediation.

Do you clean carpet and upholstery in commercial properties?

Yes. We clean and dry office carpet, lobby and corridor carpet, and upholstered furniture in commercial spaces, condos, and managed properties, working around tenants and operating hours so the space stays usable wherever possible.

Is carpet cleaning part of a larger restoration?

It can be. Soft goods are some of the first things water and smoke ruin, so we treat carpet and upholstery as part of contents restoration on a larger loss, running it inside the same project as the structural work rather than as a separate vendor you have to manage.

Does insurance cover carpet and upholstery cleaning?

When the damage comes from a covered water or fire loss, it often falls under the claim. We work with all insurance carriers and document the condition of the carpet, pad, and furnishings and the work performed. We do not guarantee coverage or a payout, since those decisions rest with the policy and carrier. See insurance claim restoration assistance for the full claim path.

What should I do before Firstline arrives?

Keep off wet carpet where it is safe to do so, lift furniture legs off damp areas if you can, and avoid throwing out damaged items before they are documented when a claim may be involved. If there is an active emergency, call first.
