The puddle on your floor is the part that's easy to deal with. The dangerous water is the water that travelled, down inside wall cavities, across the top of ceilings, under flooring, and into insulation. A burst pipe usually starts as clean water, which feels reassuring. It shouldn't. According to Health Canada and CMHC, standing moisture inside building materials can begin feeding mould growth within 24 to 48 hours. Clean water that sits in drywall and insulation degrades quickly, and the warm, dark, undisturbed space inside your walls is exactly where mould wants to grow.

That's the whole reason speed matters so much.
