The term "black mould" usually points to Stachybotrys, a dark, often slimy mould that favours chronically wet, cellulose-rich materials like drywall, ceiling tile, and wood. It is not the light, dusty mould you might wipe off a windowsill; it grows where water has been sitting long enough to soften the material itself.

That difference matters for how it is handled. Because Stachybotrys colonizes the porous material rather than just the surface, the affected drywall and insulation generally have to be removed, not cleaned. Treating it like ordinary surface mould is exactly how people spread it through their home or building.

A handyman with a bottle of bleach is the most expensive mould "solution" there is, because it solves nothing. Bleach lightens the colour while the colony lives on inside the wall and the leak keeps feeding it. A few months later you are paying again, for a bigger area and a tougher trace-back.
